Volleyball Celebrates 2007 Season!

Winston-Salem, NC- The atmosphere was joyous and celebration was in the air Sunday evening on Salem College’s beautiful campus. Salem College student-athletes, parents, siblings, coaches and administration were gathered in the decorated club dining room in anticipation of tonight’s award ceremony.

Dr. Susan Pauly, Salem College’s 19th President, address the Athletic Celebration with a theme on celebrating the successes that Salem College Athletics have achieved in 2007-2008. “We are celebrating the extra-ordinary balance that somehow you achieve every year when you participate in athletics between training, coaches, studying…don’t forget to study, work study…you are absolutely amazing!” 

Tonight’s guest speaker was Ms. Elaine Penn, a former All-American basketball player who was inducted into the Greensboro College Sports Hall of Fame in 1996. Ms. Penn is a nationally recognized lecturer, trainer, performer and a former college volleyball coach for nine years. Ms. Penn’s presentation was truly inspiring as she had a high energy presentation. “When you touch just one person’s life, it has a ripple effect across the world,” stated Ms. Penn. Performing “Make A Difference,” a song she wrote, Ms. Penn sang of how we’re all connected and how we’re all responsible for each other.

Volleyball Awards:

Whitney Sorenson (Jr, Glendale, AZ) was honored as the first All State volleyball player in the history of Salem College as she was named to the North Carolina Collegiate Sports Information Association 2007 College Division All-State Women’s Volleyball Team Second Team. Sorenson holds the Salem College records for kills, average kills, digs and average digs.

The following student-athletes were honored with post-season awards by the Association of Division III Independents:

The 2007 volleyball letter winners were Whitney Sorenson (1), Christine Tillman (1), Tani Hatch (1), Katie Lineberger (1), Alyssa Alcos (1), Latricia Maye (1), Sydney Sweet (1) Joelle Whited (1) and Anna Maia (1). 

The 2007-2008 year was definitely a year of celebration for Salem College Athletics. This also marks the end of Salem College’s three years of provisional NCAA status. Starting in the fall of 2008, Salem College will a full NCAA Division III member, thus making them eligible for any NCAA post season tournament.
