Volleyball Claims Second Place in Tournament

Decatur, GA-The Salem College volleyball team had an excellent weekend finishing in second place in the “Smart Women Sweat Tournament” hosted by Agnes Scott College. The team went 2-1 on the weekend with victories over Spelman and Agnes Scott. Peace College won the tournament with a 3-0 record this weekend.

Salem got off to a strong start with a 5-game victory against Spelman (25-20, 25-10, 20-25, 23-25, 15-11) on Saturday evening. Katie Lineberger (Maiden, NC) led the team with 17 kills. Stephanee Thibodeax (Jacksonville, NC) had the most blocks in the match with 7. Christine Tillman (King, NC) led the team with 5 aces, and Sara Maher (Longmont, CO) had 12 assists.

In the first Sunday match, Salem fell to Peace in 4 games (17-25, 11-25, 25-16, 11-25). Khadija Layne (Dorcester, MA) and Tillman led the team with 8 kills each. Tillman also had the most blocks with 6 and aces with 1. Maher had 8 assists to lead the team in the match.

Salem won a four-game match against Agnes Scott (25-20, 23-25, 25-8, 25-17) to secure second place in the tournament. Tillman had a great match, leading the team with 11 kills and 3 blocks. Nicole Swinney (Woodlawn, VA) led the way with 4 aces. Maher again had the most assists with 13. Sydney Sweet (Charlotte, NC) also provided 9 assists.

“I am happy that we finished second for the first time in a tournament ever,” said Coach Amanda Ziemba. “Our offense looked the best we have all year so far. Katie Lineberger had an excellent weekend for us.”

The Salem volleyball team returns to the road next weekend as they head to the River City Tournament hosted by Marietta College in Ohio.
