ROANOKE, Va.— The Salem volleyball closed out the 2022 Maroon Classic by winning three of four matches, including a pair of victories on Saturday, September 10th, against Randolph (25-16, 25-21, 25-22) and Hollins (22-25, 25-23, 25-8, 25-17).

Salem moves to 5-1 overall on the season, establishing the best mark in program history through six matches.

OVERALL MAROON TOURNAMENT NOTES
-Aspen Bradley was named All-Tournament at the event, capping off her weekend with 50 kills (3.33 kills/set), a .412 attack percentage, seven blocks (0.47 blocks/set).
-Anna Rymer emerged with 43 kills (2.87 kills/set) along with a .351 attack percentage, nine service aces, 13 digs and nine total blocks (five solo) and 0.60 blocks/set.
-Macy Nelson led the Spirits with 48 digs (3.20 digs/set), five more than Valeria Rosa Lopez who closed with 43 digs and 33 kills.
-Ella Brameus capped off a solid weekend with eight service aces, 39 digs and 24 kills.
-Spirits capped off the tournament with a .243 attack percentage, finishing with 180 kills, along with 17 total blocks (1.13 blocks/set).

SALEM vs. RANDOLPH RECAP
Valeria Rosa Lopez drove home a team-best 12 kills, posting a .500 attack percentage along the way, while Ella Brameus finished with eight and the duo of Anna Rymer and Aspen Bradley tallied seven apiece to lead Salem to a three-set victory over Randolph by scores of 25-16, 25-21, 25-22.

Macy Nelson was the defensive leads with 19 digs, while Lopez completed her double-double outing with 12 digs and Ashlyn Wood added 10, giving Salem 67 in the match. The combination of Ashlee Peek (18 assists) and Wood (15 assists) piloted a Spirit offense that closed with 41 kills.

FIRST SET RECAP
Salem broke an early 4-4 tie with trio of kills by Lopez and assumed a 14-9 lead with Peek in serve. A series of kills from Lopez, Brameus and Rymer stretched the Spirits' lead to 18-12, forcing the second timeout from Randolph. Salem surrendered just three points down the stretch, while Macy Nelson delivered a service ace, Rymer added three kills to complete the win.

SECOND SET RECAP
The Wildcats scratched their way to a five-all deadlock with Salem in the early stages of the second, but Salem again managed to move in front, this time behind a pair of service aces from Rymer. Leading by six, 13-7, following a kill from Nikita Sizemore, Salem was unable to hold off a charge from Randolph. The Wildcats countered with a 6-2 run, pulling to within two, before finally drawing even at 19. After a final 20-all deadlock, the combination of two Bradley kills and a service ace by Lopez gave Salem the win.

THIRD SET RECAP

Randolph jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the third, eventually moving in front by seven (12-5), before the combination of Bradley and Brameus sparked the Spirits. Brameus aced the Wildcats and Rymer delivered a kill, trimming the deficit to 17-13, while Bradley came through with two timely kills to complete the comeback with a 22-22 tie. With Nelson in serve, a pair of Randolph attack errors coupled with kills from Brameus and Lopez completed the third sweep of the season.

SALEM vs. HOLLINS RECAP
Salem closed out the two-day, four-match event with a four-set victory (22-25, 25-23, 25-8, 25-17) over Hollins. Aspen Bradley was the primary source of offense in the match, delivering 16 kills in 31 attempts, closing with a .387 attack percentage. Anna Rymer complemented Bradley with nine kills in 15 attempts, posting a .467 attack percentage, while Macy Nelson was responsible for 12 digs.

The Spirits were in offensive sync throughout with a .267 attack percentage, closing with 42 kills and limiting themselves to 15 miscues.

FIRST SET RECAP
Salem dropped just its fourth set of the season in the second match of the afternoon. The Spirits managed just a .172 hitting percentage, while Hollins came through with 15 kills and a .286 attack percentage. With the set knotted at 15, Hollins scored five of the next eight points to forge ahead by two. Lopez and Bradley kept Salem within striking distance down the stretch, but it was Carrie Nelson that delivered the decisive kills for the win.

SECOND SET RECAP
The Spirits regained their offensive rhythm from the first match, closing the second set with 14 kills and a .267 attack percentage in the frame. Ashlyn Wood's service game, along with kills by Rymer and Abrielle Eckenroth, allowed Salem to snag the early lead. The two units would be separated by the slimmest of margins for the next 20 points before a kill and service ace by Rymer, along with a slam from Bradley, stretched the margin got 18-13. Hollins would trim the deficit to one late, 19-18, two Bradley kills and five unforced errors allowed Salem to even the match at 1-1.

THIRD SET RECAP
Salem enjoyed its best attack percentage of the match in the third set, posting 10 kills and a .364 attack percentage in a decisive 25-8 triumph. The Spirits grabbed a 14-0 lead with Wood in serve, who enjoyed four service aces in that stretch. Both Bradley and Rymer slammed home two kills down the stretch as Salem earned the victory.

FOURTH SET RECAP
The momentum from the third set carried over into the fourth as Salem jumped out to a 7-2 lead behind the service game of Brameus. Bradley put together three kills in a six-point stretch as Salem moved in front 12-8. That lead ballooned to 20-11 with Brameus again in serve, forcing three Hollins errors along with a service ace of her own. Each unit scored five points down the stretch, but it was the blocks by Bradley and LindaGrace York along with a kill by Wood and a service ace from Rymer that provided Salem with the win.
