The Salem Department of Athletics capped off its 2023-24 athletic season with a banquet held in Varsity Gym, located on the Salem Campus, on Thursday, April 25th. The banquet honored the student-athletes for their individual contributions over the course of the year.
This week, from April 1-6, the NCAA national office is celebrating NCAA Division III week. We in Salem College Athletics will be doing the same, to honor our student-athletes and their contributions to the program, campus community as well as the region, nation and world.
On Wednesday, March 27th, Salem’s Cristina Battistini and Ti’Erra Lee, were selected as members of the 2023-24 Academic All-District basketball team by the College Sports Communicators.
Seniors Dionne Sampson and Cree Bass were among those recognized as top performers by the USA South Conference, when the league announced its 2023-24 awards for basketball on Wednesday, February 21st.
Dionne Sampson put the finishing touches on her Salem career, putting together a 14-point performance, while Isabella Childs added 12 and Ti’Erra Lee delivered 10 in Salem’s 2023-24 season finale.
The Salem duo of Dionne Sampson and Ti’Erra Lee reached double figures, finishing with 12 points and 11 points, respectively, but it was a 20-point effort by A’Cetta Farrait that proved to be the difference as Mary Baldwin earned the season series split with the Spirits by claiming a 60-55 win.
Salem received a pair of double-double performances from Cree Bass (12 points / 10 rebounds) and Isabella Childs (21 points / 12 rebounds), but it was a 38-point outing from William Peace’s Tanaesha Ellison that proved to be the difference as the Pacers edged out Salem 87-84 on Senior Day.
Salem will host its 2023-24 home regular season finale on Saturday, February 10th, when William Peace comes to the Triad. The game will serve as Senior Day for the quartet of Cree Bass, Natasha Guo, Alize Munn and Dionne Sampson.
Salem’s offense, which struggled throughout the course of the game, was led by Dionne Sampson. Sampson closed with 11 points, hitting four field goals and 3-of-5 at the charity stripe, ran her double-digit scoring streak to 13 straight games.
Dionne Sampson posted a game-high 24 points, topping the 20-point margin for the sixth time this season, as Salem earned its third home win of the season by a 70-62 margin over Mary Baldwin on Saturday afternoon.
Salem fifth-year senior Dionne Sampson became the fourth player in program history to reach 1,000 career points in a clash with Pfeiffer on Friday evening at Varsity Gym.
The Salem basketball team opens February with a two-game in two-day stretch when it hosts Pfeiffer and Mary Baldwin on Friday and Saturday, respectively. Salem will look to avenge a recent 65-58 setback to the Falcons at 5 p.m., before facing Mary Baldwin for the first time this season on Saturday at 2 p.m.
Greensboro used a 25-point fourth quarter outburst, overcoming a 43-37 deficit entering the frame, and earned a 62-56 victory over Salem when the two teams clashed at Hanes Gym on Saturday afternoon in a USA South Conference contest.
After facing Meredith on Tuesday evening, Salem heads to both Greensboro (Jan. 27) and Methodist (Jan. 30) in search of two more road wins this season as the Spirits look to improve on their 7-10 overall mark and 3-7 record in the USA South Conference. The Spirits begin their quest for their eighth victory at Greensboro on Saturday afternoon.
Meredith held off a 21-point fourth quarter surge by Salem, which resulted in Dionne Sampson closing with 22 points and Isabella Childs adding 11, to earn a 67-60 USA South Conference victory at Varsity Gym on Tuesday evening in Winston-Salem, N.C.
The Spirits conclude the month of January with a three-game in seven-day stretch that includes one home game, which will take place on Tuesday, January 23rd against Meredith.

Salem’s lineup was led by the tandem of Nykerah Engle and Dionne Sampson, who scored 14 points each. It marks the fourth time that Engle has topped the double figure mark in her first year, while Sampson moved her career point total to 923.

Alize Munn scored a career-high 35 points, one point off the program mark established by Satavia Taylor on January 11, 2014, and Dionne Sampson added 24 points of her own as Salem earned a 95-83 victory at William Peace in USA South Conference action on Wednesday afternoon.
Salem heads into Tuesday’s affair with William Peace looking for back-to-back USA South Conference wins. After posting an 88-64 victory over intracity rival Greensboro, Salem has the chance to post consecutive league wins for the first time since the 2017-18 campaign.
Dionne Sampson exploded for a season-high 27 points, hitting 9-of-14 from the floor and converting 8-of-9 free throws in the process, to help Salem halt a 15-game losing skid against Greensboro with an 88-64 victory.
The completion of the 2023 fall semester saw 39 student-athletes earn Dean’s List honors at Salem College. A student must maintain a minimum 3.5 grade point average in a minimum of 12 courses to earn this distinction.
